FireSmart Services for First Nation Communities
FireSmart BC is a provincial program dedicated to reducing the risk and impacts of wildfires on communities, critical infrastructure, and the environment. Guided by nationally recognized FireSmart principles, the program helps homeowners, local governments, and First Nations build wildfire resilience through practical prevention and mitigation strategies. FireSmart BC provides education, resources, and funding support for activities such as home and property assessments, vegetation management, and community wildfire resiliency planning. The program also emphasizes collaboration between residents, fire departments, and governments to strengthen preparedness and response. By promoting simple, proactive actions—like creating defensible space, using fire-resistant building materials, and maintaining non-combustible zones—FireSmart BC empowers communities to take shared responsibility for wildfire safety. Ultimately, its goal is to protect lives, property, and cultural values while fostering safer, more resilient communities across British Columbia.
